that are broadly classified as synthesis, purification, and QA/QC. The plant engineer would provide technical support to the
operators, operations supervisor, and operations manager. This might include periodic review of various operations including
capacity, throughput, material balance, heat balance, efficiency, quality, etc.
- The plant engineer will assist/lead design of equipment or processes. A solid academic background and experience in the
application of fundamental chemical engineering principles to the design of chemical process is key to this element of the job.
Many design projects will be done by a team comprised of technical staff including the plant engineer and engineers from
outside engineering company. This could include design and sizing of equipment, as well as developing heat and material
balance, PIDs (process and instrument diagram), and PFD (process flow diagram).
- The plant engineer will assist in safe operation of the plant. Included in this task are hazop/safety review of existing and
new operations, facilitate incident reviews (rotation), etc.
- The plant engineer will assist in the development of the quality program as the company strives to meet customer’s
requirements. This will likely involve ISO 9000 type control with special emphasis on SPC (statistical process control)
- The plant engineer job is in Houston and only occasional travel is expected.
